Collaring Coyotes
First we use noose-poles to restrain the caught coyote. One noose goes around the neck, and one around the muzzle. |
Next we tape the muzzle shut for our safety, and check the animal over for injury and overall condition. |
The legs are then carefully tied in pairs. The coyote is now ready to be weighed using a hand scale. |
A variety of scientific data is collected, including weight, sex, age, condition, and a hair sample. |
The coyote is fitted with an ear tag and a radio-collar |
Sometimes after the coyote is released it takes the occasion to get some pay-back on the noose-poles. This is coyote 12, a small female currently biting her noose. |
